The Different Types of Orchids

To those who do not know better, an orchid is an orchid, but in reality, there are many types of orchids with which one can choose to adorn their gardens. There is a variety of shapes and colors as well as varying levels of difficulty when it comes to the flower's care.

Below are a few examples of the different types of orchids that are available.

Moth Orchids

If you walk into a small florist shop or chain store, this is the type of orchid you are likely to find. These are typically sold in pots to be kept indoors.

They are fairly easy to care for as they bloom only once a year. Even though they do not bloom more often, the flowers that are produced usually last a few months.

Dendrobium Orchids

This is one of the types of orchids that can be grown indoors fairly easily.

Available in a variety of colors, it is important that you take care to be sure that the temperature stays fairly warm. If it drops below about 65 degrees Fahrenheit, the plant will probably lose most or all of the leaves.

Slipper Orchids

This orchid is unique in its appearance, making it a favorite among many gardeners.

This plant can be a bit pricey and difficult to grow, but for many, it is worth the extra expense and effort in order to be able to enjoy the blooms that are available in most soft colors as well as more bold options.

Vanda Orchids

This is another of the types of orchids that do best when grown indoors. This is because it is so much easier to control the climate and these plants can be quite fussy. In fact, they grow best in greenhouses. That is not to say that Vanda orchids cannot be grown outside, but you will need to carefully monitor water and temperature to ensure proper growth and health.

Cymbidium Orchids

These orchids are popular and one look at a healthy plant and it is easy to tell why. They produce a very large number of blooms and, with proper care, those blooms can last for months.  Like most types of orchids, they require a good amount of water and fairly temperate conditions.

Which orchids are best for your purpose will depend on many factors including:

• Color and shape of the blooms

• Amount of care

• Level of difficulty of that care

• How abundantly the plant blooms

• How long the blooms last

• Whether or not the blooms are fragrant

While, as mentioned earlier, it is easier to grow most types of orchids indoors, they also make a beautiful addition to a garden. If you choose to grow orchids in a garden rather than indoors, keep in mind that these plants will need to be looked after quite closely.

Many orchids make a lovely choice for cut flower arrangements. Whether you grow them in a pot or a garden, you will be able to use the blooms for that purpose.

When grown indoors, or outdoors in warm climates, many of the blooms may last for months. This will give you the chance to enjoy the fruit of springtime, even after the season has passed.
